The Irish Driver Theory Test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from a bank of approximately 800 questions across 5 categories. You have 40 minutes to complete the test, taken on a computer at a test centre.

You need to answer at least 35 out of 40 questions correctly (87.5%) to pass the Irish Driver Theory Test.

The Driver Theory Test costs €45 for cars (Category B). You can book online at theorytest.ie. There are over 40 test centres across Ireland, including in Dublin North, Dublin IFSC, and Dublin West.

(1) Rules of the Road — speed limits, right of way, motorway rules, road markings. (2) Traffic Signs & Signals — all sign types, traffic lights, road markings. (3) Vehicle Mechanics & Safety — pre-drive checks, tyres, lights, engine. (4) Safe Driving — following distance, weather driving, overtaking, fatigue. (5) Hazard Behaviour — eco-driving, risk perception, reaction time, alcohol & drugs.

Yes. The sequence is: Theory Test → Learner Permit → EDT lessons → RSA Driving Test → Full Licence. You cannot start EDT lessons until you have a valid learner permit, and you cannot get a learner permit without passing the theory test first.

Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years. You must apply for your learner permit within this 2-year window. If it expires before you get your permit, you will need to resit the theory test.

Yes. There is no limit on the number of times you can resit the theory test. You must wait at least 5 working days before rebooking after a failure. Each resit costs €45.
