Booking your RSA driving test is a straightforward process — but only if you know exactly what is required before you log in. Book too early and your application will be rejected. Miss a requirement and you lose time. This guide walks you through every step from checking your eligibility to clicking confirm, with all the details specific to North Dublin learner drivers.

Source & Credit: Eligibility rules, fee information, and the booking process in this guide are based on official guidance published by the Road Safety Authority (Údarás Um Shábháilteacht Ar Bhóithre), Ireland, available at rsa.ie and the Rules of the Road (Revision No. 6, April 2018), published by the RSA. Always check rsa.ie directly for the most current fees and procedures. BP Driving School is an RSA-approved driving school (ADI) based in Swords, North Dublin.

Before You Book — The Three Requirements

The RSA will only allow you to book a driving test if you meet three specific eligibility criteria. These are not optional — if any one of them is not met, your booking will either be rejected outright or you may turn up on test day and be turned away, losing your €85 fee. Check all three before you log in to MyRoadSafety.

1. You hold a valid Irish learner permit for the correct vehicle category You must hold a current, in-date learner permit for the vehicle category you wish to test in. For a car test, this is Category B. Your permit must not have expired. If it has expired, you must renew it at the NDLS before booking your test. You must bring your learner permit to the test centre on the day — without it, the test will not proceed and you will lose your fee.
2. You have held your current learner permit for at least 6 months (the 6-month rule) As stated in the RSA Rules of the Road: you are not allowed to take a driving test for at least six months after the start date of your current permit. This is a legal requirement, not a guideline. The clock starts from the date printed on your most recent learner permit — not from any previous permit. See the full explanation in the next section.
3. All 12 EDT sessions are logged in the RSA system by your ADI Every one of your 12 EDT sessions must have been entered into the RSA MyRoadSafety system by your RSA-approved driving instructor (ADI). It is not enough to have completed the sessions — they must appear in the system. You can verify this by logging into your MyRoadSafety account and checking your EDT record. Allow up to 10 working days after a session for it to appear.
Do not book your test if any of these three criteria are not yet met. The RSA system may allow you to complete the booking in some cases, but if you arrive on test day without a valid permit, without 6 months of permit tenure, or without your EDT logged, the test will be cancelled and you will lose your €85 fee.

The 6-Month Rule — What It Means and How to Calculate It

The 6-month rule is one of the most misunderstood requirements for the Irish driving test. It is worth reading carefully because getting it wrong can mean a wasted test appointment and a lost fee.

The 6-Month Rule — How It Works Permit issued Day 0 Earliest test date 6 months from permit start date ❌ Cannot book test yet ✓ Eligible to sit test Book as early as eligible The 6-month clock starts from the start date on your CURRENT permit — not any previous permit Source: RSA Rules of the Road, Section 3 — rsa.ie
You cannot sit your RSA driving test until at least 6 months have passed from the start date on your current learner permit. Book your test as soon as you become eligible — waiting times can be long.

The key points to understand about the 6-month rule are:

  • It applies to your current permit's start date — if you renewed your learner permit, the 6-month clock restarted from the renewal date, not the original date.
  • You can book before the 6 months are up — the system may allow you to select a test date that falls after the 6-month point, as long as the date itself is at least 6 months from your permit start. You cannot select a test date that falls before the 6-month mark.
  • There are limited exceptions: The 6-month rule does not apply to holders of a full driving licence from another country who have held that licence for more than 6 months — provided they send their original licence and a letter of entitlement to the RSA. Category BE vehicles are also exempt. Check rsa.ie for the current full list of exceptions.
  • The practical implication: Book your test as soon as you are eligible. Dublin waiting times can run to several months — every week you delay booking adds to the time you will wait.
When should you book? The RSA recommends booking your driving test when you have completed all 12 EDT sessions and your ADI confirms they have been logged. Do not wait until you feel "completely ready" to book — book as soon as you are eligible and use the waiting time to build additional practice and pre-test preparation. Most learners in North Dublin find they have weeks to months of waiting time after booking, which is valuable preparation time.

EDT Completion — Confirmed Before You Book

Your 12 EDT sessions must be fully logged in the RSA MyRoadSafety system before the system will let you book your driving test. This is an automated check — the booking portal verifies your EDT record against your learner permit number.

To verify your EDT record before booking:

  1. Log in to myroadsafety.rsa.ie using your learner permit number and PPSN.
  2. Navigate to the My EDT section of your dashboard.
  3. Confirm all 12 sessions are listed as completed, with dates and your ADI's details.
  4. If any session is missing, contact your ADI immediately — they can upload or correct any missing sessions.
Allow up to 10 working days after each EDT session for your ADI's upload to appear in your MyRoadSafety record. If Session 12 was completed recently, do not try to book immediately — wait to see it appear in the system first. If it has not appeared after 10 working days, contact your ADI.

Step-by-Step: Booking Your Driving Test on MyRoadSafety

The RSA's online booking portal is myroadsafety.rsa.ie. All driving test applications for Category B (car) must be made through this portal. Below is the full booking process, step by step.

🔒 myroadsafety.rsa.ie
MyRoadSafety — RSA Driver Licensing Portal
Log in with your Learner Permit Number and PPSN to access your driver record, EDT progress, and driving test booking.
1

Go to myroadsafety.rsa.ie and log in

Navigate to myroadsafety.rsa.ie. If you already have a MyRoadSafety account, log in using your learner permit number and PPSN. If you do not have an account yet, click Register and create one — you will need your learner permit number, PPSN, date of birth, and a valid email address. Account creation is straightforward and takes under 5 minutes.

Tip: Your MyRoadSafety account is also where you check your EDT progress and track your full driver record. It is worth setting it up well before your test booking date.
2

Navigate to "Book a Driving Test" from your dashboard

Once logged in, your MyRoadSafety dashboard shows your driver record and any existing bookings. Find and click the "Book a Driving Test" option. The portal will perform an automatic eligibility check at this point — if your EDT is not fully logged or your 6-month period has not elapsed, it will display an error message explaining why you cannot proceed.

3

Select vehicle category — Category B for a car test

Select your vehicle category. For the standard car driving test, this is Category B. If you are testing in an automatic car only, this is still Category B — but note that passing in an automatic will result in a Code 78 restriction on your full licence, limiting you to automatic vehicles only. If you want to drive both manual and automatic, you must test in a manual car.

Not sure whether to test in manual or automatic? See our guide on automatic driving lessons and the Code 78 restriction.
4

Choose your preferred test centre

The portal presents a list of test centres with available dates. For North Dublin, the relevant centres are Finglas, Raheny, and Killester. You can check availability at all three simultaneously. Choose the centre where you have been practising — familiarity with the local roads significantly improves your pass chances. See our guide to North Dublin test routes for details on what each centre's routes involve.

Availability tip: If your preferred centre has no slots, check the other two — waiting times vary between centres. Even a few weeks' difference can be worth it.
5

Select your preferred date and time slot

The portal shows available appointment slots as a calendar. Slots are displayed by date — click a date to see available times. Test appointments are typically available Monday to Friday during office hours. Select the date and time that suits you best. Be aware that test appointments at North Dublin centres can fill up weeks or months in advance — do not wait for a "perfect" date. Take the earliest available slot that you can make, then use the remaining time for pre-test preparation.

Morning or afternoon? Either is fine. Morning tests are not harder than afternoon tests. Choose what works best for your own alertness and schedule.
6

Review your booking details and pay the €85 test fee

Before confirming, carefully review: the test centre address, the date, the time, and the vehicle category. Once you are satisfied, proceed to payment. The RSA driving test fee is €85, payable by credit or debit card. Once payment is processed, you will receive a booking confirmation email immediately. Save this email — you may need your booking reference number if you need to reschedule.

7

Check your confirmation email and add the date to your calendar

The confirmation email from the RSA contains your appointment date, time, test centre address, and a reference number. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive within a few minutes. Add the date and time to your phone calendar with a reminder the evening before. You will also receive a reminder from the RSA as the date approaches.

Print or screenshot your confirmation — you do not need to bring it to the test centre, but having it is useful if there is any query about your booking.

Choosing Your Test Centre — North Dublin Options

If you are a North Dublin learner driver, you have three test centres to choose from. Below is a practical overview of each one to help you decide.

Test Centre Address Best for candidates from
Finglas Mellows Road, Finglas, Dublin 11 Swords, Donabate, Santry, Glasnevin, Blanchardstown, Finglas
Raheny Harmonstown Road, Raheny, Dublin 5 Malahide, Portmarnock, Coolock, Kilbarrack, Baldoyle, Raheny
Killester Collins Avenue Extension, Killester, Dublin 5 Artane, Clontarf, Killester, Harmonstown, Marino, Drumcondra

You are not restricted to the centre nearest your home. Many candidates book at a different centre if it has shorter waiting times. If you do switch to a different centre, make sure to get at least two or three pre-test lessons on the roads used at that centre before your test date. For a detailed breakdown of what each centre's routes involve, see our guide to RSA driving test routes in North Dublin.

Waiting Times — and How to Get an Earlier Slot

Waiting times for RSA driving test appointments in Dublin are one of the most common frustrations for learner drivers. At times of peak demand, the wait from booking to test date at North Dublin centres can run to 3–6 months or more.

There are practical strategies to reduce your wait:

How to Get an Earlier Test Appointment 🔄 Check all 3 centres Finglas, Raheny and Killester have different availability at any given time 📅 Check back regularly Cancelled slots appear at short notice. Log in weekly to check for gaps Book early, prepare well Book as soon as eligible. Use the wait for pre-test lessons and mock tests 🗓 Take any available slot first Accept the earliest slot you can make. You can reschedule to an earlier date if one appears — with 5+ days' notice 📲 Set a myroadsafety.rsa.ie reminder Log in on a fixed day each week. Monday mornings often see cancellations from the previous week
Practical strategies for North Dublin learner drivers dealing with long test waiting times. Cancelled appointments appear in real time on myroadsafety.rsa.ie — checking regularly can secure an earlier date.
The silver lining of a long wait: Every week between booking and your test date is an opportunity for more practice. Candidates who book early and use the waiting period for structured pre-test lessons and a mock test consistently perform better than those who book late and cram preparation into the last week.

The RSA Driving Test Fee — €85

The current RSA driving test fee for a Category B (car) test is €85. This is paid at the time of booking via credit or debit card on the MyRoadSafety portal. There is no option to pay by cash, cheque, or bank transfer through the online portal.

Always verify the current fee at rsa.ie before booking. The RSA adjusts test fees periodically. The €85 figure reflects the fee at the time of writing. BP Driving School recommends checking rsa.ie directly for the most current fee before completing your booking.

The fee covers one test attempt. If you fail, you must pay the full €85 again to book a new appointment. There are no discounts for repeat bookings. If you are concerned about the cost of repeat attempts, the best investment is thorough preparation before your first test — a mock test (€100) and pre-test lessons more than pay for themselves if they help you pass first time.

Rescheduling and Cancellation Rules

Life happens — you may need to move your test date. The RSA allows rescheduling, but within strict conditions. Understand these rules before your test date approaches.

More than 5 clear working days before your test: You can reschedule online at myroadsafety.rsa.ie at no charge. Your €85 fee transfers to the new booking. "Clear working days" means weekdays excluding your test day — so if your test is on a Thursday, you must reschedule before the previous Thursday (5 clear working days = Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri of the preceding week).

Fewer than 5 clear working days before your test: You will lose your €85 fee if you cancel or reschedule within this window. The only exceptions are genuine medical emergencies — contact the RSA directly if this applies to you.

Failure to attend (DNA — Did Not Attend): If you simply do not show up for your test without cancelling in advance, you will lose your €85 fee and be recorded as a non-attendance. You must book and pay for a new appointment. There is no grace period for non-attendances.

The "clear working days" rule catches people out. Working days means Monday to Friday — weekends do not count. If your test is on a Monday, you must reschedule by the previous Monday at the latest (5 clear working days: Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri/Mon). If your test is on a Friday, you must reschedule by the previous Friday. When in doubt, reschedule earlier rather than later.

After You Book — What to Do Next

Booking the test is the easy part. What you do in the weeks between booking and test day determines whether you pass. Here is how to use that time well:

Book pre-test lessons on your specific test routes Contact BP Driving School and arrange pre-test lessons specifically on the roads used at your chosen test centre — Finglas, Raheny, or Killester. Each centre has distinct routes, roundabouts, junctions, and hazards. Practising on the actual roads you will face removes the unfamiliarity factor entirely.
Book a mock test 2–3 weeks before your test date A mock test with an RSA-approved ADI conducted on your actual test routes gives you an objective assessment of your current fault profile. You will know exactly which competencies need work and which are solid — with enough time to address any weaknesses before the real test.
Continue practising with your Sponsor Supervised practice hours between formal lessons remain valuable even after EDT is complete. Ask your Sponsor to drive you through the roads near your test centre at least once a week in the run-up to your test. The RSA notes that the more supervised driving you accumulate, the lower your collision risk — and the better your test performance.
Prepare what to bring on test day You must bring your valid Irish learner permit to the test. Without it, the test will not proceed and you will lose your fee. If you need a car for the test, arrange this in advance — either your own vehicle (roadworthy, taxed, insured, NCT-valid, L-plates fitted) or hire a test car from your instructor. BP Driving School offers car hire for the driving test if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at myroadsafety.rsa.ie. Log in or create an account using your learner permit number and PPSN. Select "Book a driving test", choose Category B, select your preferred North Dublin test centre (Finglas, Raheny, or Killester), choose a date and time, and pay the €85 fee by card. You need all 12 EDT sessions logged and at least 6 months' permit tenure before the system will allow you to book.

The RSA driving test fee is €85 for a Category B (car) test, paid by credit or debit card at the time of booking on myroadsafety.rsa.ie. This fee covers one test attempt. If you fail, you pay €85 again for a new booking. Always confirm the current fee at rsa.ie before booking, as fees are subject to change.

You must have held your current learner permit for at least 6 months before you can sit the RSA driving test. The clock starts from the start date printed on your current permit — not any previous permit. If you renewed your permit, the 6-month period restarted from the renewal date. There are limited exceptions for certain foreign licence holders. This rule is stated in the RSA Rules of the Road, Section 3 — rsa.ie.

Yes — you can reschedule at myroadsafety.rsa.ie at no charge, provided you do so at least 5 clear working days before your test date. If you reschedule with fewer than 5 working days' notice, or simply do not attend, you lose the €85 fee. "Clear working days" means Monday to Friday, not counting weekends or the test day itself. Reschedule as early as possible if you know you need to move your date.

Yes — your valid learner permit is mandatory on the day. As stated in the RSA Rules of the Road: "the tester will check the permit to confirm that it is yours, is current and is for the correct category of vehicle." If you arrive without your permit, the test will be cancelled and you will lose your €85 fee. Also ensure your vehicle has current tax, insurance, NCT (if applicable), and L-plates properly fitted.

Waiting times vary and change regularly. At peak demand periods, candidates at Finglas, Raheny, and Killester have faced waits of 3–6 months or longer. The best approach is to book as soon as you are eligible (all EDT logged, 6 months' permit tenure). Check all three North Dublin centres for availability — they often have different wait times. Log in to myroadsafety.rsa.ie regularly, as cancelled slots appear in real time and can reduce your wait significantly.

If your learner permit expires before your test date, you must renew it at the NDLS before attending the test. Arriving with an expired permit means the test will not proceed and you lose your fee. Renew well in advance — do not wait until the week before your test to discover an expiry issue. Check the expiry date on your permit as soon as you book your test. Note that renewing your permit restarts the 6-month rule clock — plan accordingly if your test date might be affected.
