Getting turned away on RSA driving test day because you forgot a document is every learner driver's nightmare. Here is the complete checklist of everything you must bring to your Irish driving test.

Essential Documents You Must Bring
If you arrive at the RSA test centre without any of the following, your test will be cancelled and you will lose your €85 test fee:
If You Are Using Your Own Car
If you are bringing your own vehicle to the driving test, it must meet the following legal requirements — and you should be able to provide documentation for all of them at the test centre if asked:
- Valid motor tax — your car must have a valid tax disc/current tax
- Valid NCT — if your car is over 4 years old it requires a valid NCT certificate
- Valid insurance — you must be insured to drive the vehicle (learner driver insurance is required)
- L plates displayed — white L plates must be displayed front and rear
- All lights and indicators working — the tester will check these before the test
- A second rear-view mirror or equivalent — required for the instructor's/tester's use
- Tyres in good condition — legal tread depth is 1.6mm minimum
If You Are Hiring a Test Car
If you are hiring a car for your RSA test through a driving school like BP Driving School, you do not need to worry about tax, NCT, or insurance — all of this is handled. You simply bring your learner permit and appointment confirmation. Our test car hire service includes a fully insured, NCT-passed, dual-control car and your instructor accompanying you to and from the test centre.
What to Wear
There are no specific clothing requirements for the RSA driving test, but there are practical considerations:
- Wear comfortable shoes that allow full, precise pedal control — avoid flip-flops, sandals, or very thick-soled shoes that reduce pedal feel
- If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, wear them to the test
- Dress comfortably — you will be in the car for approximately 45 minutes
Morning of the Test
On the morning of your test:
- Allow extra time — arrive at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your appointment
- Do a short warm-up drive to the test centre if possible — BP Driving School's test car hire includes this warm-up drive
- Have a light meal — nerves on an empty stomach are worse
- Double-check your documents before leaving the house
- Do not consume alcohol the night before — the blood alcohol limit for learner drivers is zero
At the Test Centre
When you arrive at the test centre, report to the reception desk and present your learner permit and booking confirmation. The RSA tester will:
- Check your documentation
- Explain the test format to you
- Ask you pre-drive vehicle questions (e.g. how to check tyre pressure, how to check oil, how to operate the rear demister)
- Accompany you to your car and begin the test drive
The test drive typically lasts 40–45 minutes. You will then return to the test centre where the tester will tell you the result and give you a debrief on any faults observed.
