Failing your driving test because you forgot something is the most avoidable outcome imaginable — and it still happens every week at test centres across Ireland. Missing your learner permit, arriving with an expired NCT, or having L-plates that are inside the windscreen instead of on the outside are all enough to cancel your test on the spot and cost you your €85 fee. This guide covers everything you need, explained in full detail, with an interactive checklist you can tick off the night before.

Source & Credit: Vehicle requirements, disc requirements, and test-day rules in this article are taken directly from the Rules of the Road (Revision No. 6, April 2018), Section 3 — "The Driving Test", published by the Road Safety Authority (Údarás Um Shábháilteacht Ar Bhóithre), Ireland. Official requirements and the RSA's own checklist are available at rsa.ie. BP Driving School is an RSA-approved driving school (ADI) based in Swords, North Dublin.

What Gets Your Test Cancelled Immediately — and Your Fee Lost

The RSA is explicit about this in the Rules of the Road. There are specific grounds on which your test will be cancelled on the spot, and you will lose your €85 fee with no refund. Every one of these is entirely avoidable with a proper checklist the night before.

🪪
No Learner Permit

You do not present a valid, current Irish learner permit for the correct vehicle category. The tester checks it immediately — no permit, no test.

🪧
Missing or Incorrect L-Plates

Your vehicle does not display proper L-plates at the front and back, or the L-plates are incorrectly positioned (e.g. inside the windscreen).

📋
Missing Required Discs

Your vehicle is missing a current motor tax disc, valid insurance disc, or valid NCT disc (if the vehicle requires one).

🚗
Vehicle Not Roadworthy

The tester assesses your vehicle before the test begins. If it is not roadworthy — faulty lights, tyre issues, brake problems — the test will not proceed.

Arriving Late

The RSA requires you to be at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your appointment time. If you are late, the test slot may be forfeited.

🚙
Wrong or Unsuitable Vehicle

The vehicle must be representative of Category B — it must meet minimum size and specification requirements. An unsuitable vehicle will not be accepted.

⛔ All of these result in a lost €85 fee. The RSA will not refund your test fee if your test is cancelled due to any of the above. The solution is simple: check everything the night before, not on the morning of your test.

Mandatory Item 1 — Your Valid Learner Permit

Your learner permit is the single most important item to bring on test day. Without it, you cannot sit the test under any circumstances. The Rules of the Road states clearly: you must give the driver tester your current Irish learner permit, and the tester will check it to confirm that it is yours, is current, and is for the correct category of vehicle.

Your Learner Permit — Three Things the Tester Checks 👤 It is yours Name and photo on the permit must match you 📅 It is current The expiry date has not passed — check this now 🚗 Correct category Must be Category B for a car test

Three common learner permit problems to check for:

  • Expired permit: Check the expiry date on your permit right now — not on the morning of your test. Learner permits last two years for the first and second permit, and one year for a third or subsequent permit. If yours is close to expiry, renew it at the NDLS before your test date.
  • Wrong category: Your permit must say Category B. If you have permits for multiple categories, bring the correct one. If you have updated your permit recently, make sure you are bringing the newest version, not an old one from a drawer.
  • Physical condition: A permit that is badly damaged, faded, or delaminated may be rejected as unreadable. If yours is in poor condition, get a replacement at the NDLS well before your test date.
Do not leave your permit in your car overnight before test day. Put it somewhere you will definitely not forget it — on top of your keys, in your bag, or placed specifically with your glasses case or other items you always take with you.

The Vehicle — Full RSA Requirements

You must have use of a suitable vehicle for your driving test. This can be your own car, a family member's or friend's car, or a car hired from your driving instructor for test day. Whatever vehicle you use, it must meet a specific set of requirements — all of which must be verified before you arrive at the test centre.

According to the RSA Rules of the Road, the vehicle must be representative of the Category B licensing category — meaning it must be a typical mid-range vehicle in terms of size, weight, and power. Vehicles that are at the extreme small or large end of Category B may not be accepted. If you have any doubt about your vehicle's suitability, check rsa.ie or contact the test centre in advance.

The Four Things Your Vehicle Must Display

The RSA requires four specific items to be visibly displayed on your vehicle on test day. The tester or RSA staff will check these before you begin. Any one of these missing means your test is cancelled and your fee is forfeited.

🟦
Motor Tax Disc
Current and valid. Displayed in lower left corner of windscreen. Check the expiry month — not just the year.
🟩
Insurance Disc
Current and valid. Confirms the vehicle is insured. The policy must cover use of the vehicle for a driving test.
🟨
NCT Disc
Required if the vehicle is 4+ years old. Must be in date. Vehicles under 4 years old are exempt from NCT.
🟪
L-Plates (front & rear)
Displayed outside on both front and back. Red L on white background. Must be securely attached, not inside the windscreen.
Important on insurance: Your insurance policy must cover driving with a learner permit on a driving test. Most standard policies do — but check your policy wording or call your insurer if you are not certain. If you are using an instructor's car for your test, the instructor's business insurance covers test day use.

L-Plates — The Right Way

L-plates are one of the most misunderstood requirements. Candidates turn up regularly with L-plates positioned incorrectly and face a cancelled test. Here is exactly what is required:

L-Plate Requirements — RSA Driving Test YOUR CAR L FRONT — outside L REAR — outside ❌ WRONG L Inside the windscreen = test cancelled ✓ CORRECT L Attached to outside of vehicle — front & rear Source: RSA Rules of the Road, Section 3 — rsa.ie
L-plates must be attached to the outside of the vehicle — front and rear. Placing them inside the windscreen does not meet the requirement and will result in your test being cancelled.

L-plate rules in full:

  • L-plates must be displayed at the front and back of the vehicle — both are required.
  • They must be attached to the outside of the vehicle — not inside the windscreen or rear window behind glass.
  • They must show a red letter "L" on a white background and be of the correct prescribed size.
  • They must be clearly visible and securely attached — loose or partially detached L-plates may not be accepted.
  • If you are using your instructor's car for the test, the instructor will fit their own L-plates — you do not need to provide them.

Roadworthiness — What It Means in Practice

Your vehicle must be roadworthy on test day. This means it must be in a condition that is safe to drive on public roads. The tester may do a brief check of the vehicle before you begin, and if they identify a clear safety defect, they will cancel the test.

Key roadworthiness checks to carry out the evening before your test:

Vehicle Roadworthiness — Check the Night Before 💡 All lights Headlights, indicators, brake & reverse lights 🔘 Tyres 1.6mm minimum tread. Correct pressure 🪟 Windscreen Clear, no major cracks. Wipers working 🛢️ Fluids Engine oil, coolant, washer fluid — topped up 🔔 Horn Must work. Test it beforehand 🪞 Mirrors All clean and adjustable 🛑 Handbrake Holds the car on a slope 🚨 Warning lights No active warning lights 🔧 Seatbelts Driver + passenger working 🧹 Clean interior Tidy — no clutter on floor
Check all of these the evening before your test — not on the morning. If any light is out or any fault is found, you need time to get it fixed before your appointment.

Personal Items to Bring

Beyond the learner permit and the vehicle requirements, there are personal items that are important to have with you on test day. Some are mandatory (glasses if prescribed); others are strongly recommended for a smooth experience.

  • Glasses or contact lenses (if prescribed for driving): If your learner permit has a condition requiring you to wear corrective lenses while driving, you must wear them during the test. Arriving without your glasses when your licence requires them is grounds for refusing to conduct the test. If you wear contacts, bring a spare pair of glasses as backup.
  • Confirmation email / booking reference: You do not technically need to present this at the test centre — the tester works from a pre-scheduled list. However, having your reference number is useful if there is any query about your appointment. A screenshot on your phone is sufficient.
  • Comfortable, appropriate footwear: Wear shoes that give you proper pedal control. Flip-flops, high heels, or extremely thick-soled shoes can interfere with your feel for the pedals and your ability to operate them accurately. Flat, closed-toe shoes are ideal.
  • Something to drink: Test nerves cause a dry mouth for most people. Bring a small bottle of water to sip before your test begins — you will not be able to drink during the test itself.
  • Warm layers if it is cold: You may wait briefly outside or in a draughty test centre waiting area. Being cold and stiff is not ideal before getting into a car and performing precise manoeuvres.

No Car for Test Day? Car Hire for the Driving Test

Not every learner driver has access to a suitable, fully compliant vehicle on their test day. Common situations include: the family car is unavailable, the car developed a fault close to the test date, the candidate does not own a car and cannot borrow one, or the candidate simply wants to test in the instructor's car they have been learning in and are familiar with.

BP Driving School offers car hire for the driving test for candidates in North Dublin. When you hire the test car from us:

  • The vehicle is fully insured, taxed, NCT-valid, and roadworthy.
  • L-plates are already fitted — front and back, correctly positioned.
  • You will have driven this specific car during your pre-test lessons, so it will feel entirely familiar on test day.
  • Your instructor accompanies you to the test centre — you drive there as part of your warm-up.
  • There is no need to worry about any of the vehicle disc or roadworthiness requirements — they are all taken care of.
Instructor's tip: Testing in a car you have trained in — rather than a vehicle you only drive occasionally — removes one significant source of test-day uncertainty. Every control, every mirror position, and every reference point in the car is already familiar. This matters more than most candidates realise.

Interactive Checklist — Tick Everything Off

The Night Before — Your 8-Step Prep Routine

This is the sequence to follow the evening before your test. If you do all eight steps, you will arrive at the test centre with nothing unresolved and nothing forgotten.

1
Check your learner permit — expiry date, category, physical condition Hold your permit, read the expiry date, confirm it says Category B, confirm it is in reasonable physical condition. Place it on top of your keys or in your bag where you will not leave home without it.
2
Walk around the vehicle — check all four discs and both L-plates In daylight or with a torch, check: motor tax disc (lower left of windscreen), insurance disc (windscreen), NCT disc (windscreen, if applicable), front L-plate (outside, securely attached), rear L-plate (outside, securely attached). This takes under two minutes.
3
Check all exterior lights Turn on your headlights and walk around the car to confirm all bulbs are working — headlights, brake lights (get someone to press the pedal while you look), indicators front and rear, reverse lights. Replace any blown bulb immediately — most motor factors sell them for a few euro and they take minutes to change.
4
Check tyres — tread depth and pressure The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. Check all four tyres visually — the tread wear indicator bars in the grooves should not be flush with the tread surface. Check tyre pressure with a gauge or at a petrol station if you have not done so recently. A visibly flat or underinflated tyre will not go unnoticed.
5
Check under the bonnet — oil, coolant, washer fluid The tester may ask you vehicle safety questions before the test — being able to locate and describe these items correctly earns you easy marks. Open the bonnet, confirm oil is between min and max on the dipstick, coolant is in the reservoir, and washer fluid is topped up.
6
Confirm the test centre address and route in your phone Check that you know exactly where you are going. Enter the test centre address into maps now, not on the morning. Note the driving time and add 20 minutes for traffic. Know where to park when you arrive.
7
Set your alarm — early enough to leave without rushing The RSA requires you to be at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your appointment. Set your alarm so that you can have breakfast, load the car, and arrive early without any rush. Stress before a driving test is counterproductive.
8
Get a good night's sleep — your preparation is complete Do not cram last-minute practice. Your training is done. The best thing you can do for your performance tomorrow is to sleep well. A rested driver makes better observations, smoother decisions, and calmer manoeuvres than a tired one.

The Morning of Your Test

On test morning, your job is to arrive calm, on time, and ready. Here is a short morning routine to follow:

  • Eat a light breakfast — do not drive on an empty stomach. Hunger impairs concentration.
  • Pick up your learner permit — confirm it is in your pocket or bag before you leave the house.
  • Allow extra travel time — leave at least 20 minutes earlier than you think you need to. North Dublin morning traffic on the R108 and Malahide Road can be unpredictable.
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early — check in at reception, take a seat, and take a few deep breaths. You do not need to review notes or mental checklists. Your preparation is complete.
  • When the tester calls your name — stand up, smile, and be courteous. The tester is not your adversary. They are a professional doing a job, and a calm, confident candidate is easier to assess positively than a nervous one.
One last thing: If you realise you have forgotten something critical — your permit, or you notice a failed light bulb on the way — it is better to contact the test centre and reschedule than to arrive unprepared and lose your fee. Call the RSA or the test centre directly. Rescheduling with enough notice preserves your fee; arriving without your permit does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must bring: (1) your valid Irish learner permit for Category B; (2) a suitable vehicle displaying a current motor tax disc, valid insurance disc, valid NCT disc if applicable, and correct L-plates front and back; (3) glasses or contact lenses if your permit requires corrective lenses. Your test will be cancelled and you will lose your €85 fee if your permit is missing, if any required disc or L-plate is absent, or if your vehicle is not roadworthy. As stated in the RSA Rules of the Road, Section 3.

Your test will be cancelled immediately and you will lose your €85 fee. There is no exception and no grace period. The tester must check your permit to confirm it is yours, is current, and is for the correct vehicle category before the test can proceed. Place your permit somewhere visible the night before — on top of your car keys is the most reliable approach.

L-plates must be displayed at the front and back of the vehicle, attached to the outside — not behind the windscreen or rear window glass. They must show a red letter L on a white background and be of the correct prescribed size. Both front and rear plates are required. If your L-plate is inside the windscreen rather than on the exterior of the car, your test will be cancelled.

If your vehicle is required to have an NCT (vehicles that are 4 years old or more since first registration), it must have a valid NCT disc displayed for the driving test. If the NCT has expired, you must renew it before using the vehicle for your test. Vehicles first registered less than 4 years ago are not yet required to have an NCT. If in doubt about your specific vehicle's NCT status, check the National Car Testing Service website at ncts.ie.

Yes — you can take your RSA driving test in an automatic car. However, if you pass in an automatic, your full Irish driving licence will carry a Code 78 restriction, which means you are only legally permitted to drive automatic vehicles. If you want to drive both manual and automatic cars on your full licence, you must take the test in a manual car.

The RSA requires you to be at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your appointment time. In practice, arriving 15–20 minutes early is recommended — it gives you time to find parking, locate the entrance, check in, and settle your nerves before the tester calls your name. If you are late, your test appointment may be forfeited and you could lose your €85 fee.
