One of the most common questions from learner drivers in Dublin is whether to take their RSA driving test in a manual or automatic car. Here is a clear, honest comparison to help you decide.

The Key Difference

The only mechanical difference between driving a manual and an automatic car is that an automatic has no clutch pedal and changes gears automatically. In a manual, you must press the clutch, select the correct gear, and release the clutch smoothly every time you change speed — which is one of the most common sources of difficulty and stalling for learner drivers.

In an automatic, you simply select Drive (D) and focus entirely on steering, observation, speed management, and road positioning — all of which are what the RSA test directly assesses. BP Driving School offers EDT, practice lessons, and mock tests in both automatic and manual cars across North Dublin.

The Licence Restriction Explained

This is the most important thing to understand about the manual vs automatic decision:

If you pass your RSA driving test in an automatic car, your full Irish driving licence will carry a code 78 restriction — meaning you can only legally drive automatic vehicles. If you want to drive both manual and automatic cars, you must pass your test in a manual.

There is no way to remove the automatic restriction from your licence without sitting a new full driving test in a manual car. This is worth carefully considering if you plan to drive a mix of vehicles — for example, a company car that might be manual, or a rental car abroad.

Who Should Choose Automatic?

Automatic driving lessons and an automatic test are an excellent choice if:

  • You find clutch control very difficult and it is significantly slowing your progress
  • You are a nervous driver and want to reduce the number of things to manage at once
  • You primarily drive or plan to drive an automatic vehicle in daily life
  • You have a physical condition that makes clutch operation difficult or painful
  • You want to build driving confidence quickly before potentially re-sitting in a manual later
Many learners who found manual lessons very stressful have significantly faster progress in automatic lessons — because they can focus their mental energy on observation, positioning, and road awareness rather than gear management.

Who Should Choose Manual?

Manual driving lessons and a manual test are the better choice if:

  • You want maximum flexibility with your licence — being able to drive any car
  • You may need to drive company vehicles, rental cars, or other people's cars
  • You have no significant difficulty with clutch and gear control
  • You plan to drive in countries where automatics are less common

Is the RSA Test Standard Different for Automatic?

No. The RSA driving test is identical for both automatic and manual candidates. The same roads are driven, the same manoeuvres are tested, the same fault grades apply, and the same number of faults result in failure. The only difference is that an automatic candidate is not assessed on clutch control and gear changing — those simply are not relevant to their car.
