If you hold a driving licence from a country that Ireland does not recognise for direct exchange, you may only need 6 EDT lessons instead of 12 before sitting the Irish driving test. Note: EU/EEA licence holders and holders from countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, Switzerland and the UK can skip EDT entirely and exchange their licence directly at the NDLS. Here is everything you need to know about who qualifies for Reduced EDT and how it works.

What Is Reduced EDT?

Reduced EDT is a shortened version of Ireland's mandatory Essential Driver Training programme. Whereas standard learner drivers must complete 12 EDT lessons before sitting the RSA driving test, qualifying applicants under Reduced EDT only need to complete 6 RSA-approved lessons.

Reduced EDT was introduced to recognise that drivers who already hold a valid full driving licence from a recognised country have established driving experience and do not require the same level of foundational training as a complete beginner. The 6 Reduced EDT lessons focus specifically on Irish road rules, Irish driving standards, and RSA driving test requirements.

Who Qualifies for Reduced EDT?

You may qualify for Reduced EDT if you meet all of the following criteria:

You hold a valid full driving licence — it must be a full licence, not a learner permit or provisional licence. The licence must be for Category B (cars).
The licence was issued by a recognised non-EU/EEA country — EU/EEA licence holders typically exchange their licence directly through the NDLS without needing EDT at all. Check the NDLS website first if you hold an EU/EEA licence.
The licence has not been expired for more than 10 years — most countries require the licence to be valid or expired for less than 10 years at the time of application.
You hold a valid Irish learner permit — you must already have applied for and received your Irish Category B learner permit before starting Reduced EDT lessons.

Which Countries Qualify for Reduced EDT?

Common countries whose licence holders qualify for Reduced EDT in Ireland include:

  • United States of America
  • Brazil
  • India
  • Philippines
  • Pakistan
  • Nigeria
  • China
  • Ukraine
  • Mexico
  • Serbia
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Egypt
  • Any other country not on Ireland's recognised exchange list
Can You Exchange Directly? If your licence is from an EU/EEA country (Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Lithuania, etc.) or a recognised non-EU country (Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, Switzerland, UK, Gibraltar, Taiwan, Georgia), you can exchange your licence directly at the NDLS — no EDT required at all. One important exception: if your original licence was from a non-recognised country and you later obtained one of the above licences, you still cannot exchange it. Check your eligibility on the NDLS website →

What Is Covered in the 6 Reduced EDT Lessons?

The 6 Reduced EDT lessons are drawn from the RSA EDT syllabus and focus on the topics most relevant to Irish-specific driving conditions and RSA test requirements. Lessons are typically structured around:

Irish road rules & signs — Irish-specific road signs, road markings, and rules that may differ from your country of origin.
Junctions & roundabouts — priority rules at Irish junctions and roundabouts, which operate on give-way-to-the-right conventions that differ from many other countries.
RSA test manoeuvres — turnabout, reverse around a corner, and bay parking as assessed in the RSA test.
Observation & mirror use — the RSA-specific MSM (Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre) routine and observation requirements.
Speed management — Irish speed limits and adjusting speed to conditions as assessed in the test.
Test route familiarisation — practice on the specific roads around your chosen RSA test centre.

Cost of Reduced EDT in Dublin

BP Driving School charges €290 for the full 6-lesson Reduced EDT course, or €100 per session. All lessons include door-to-door pickup from your home or workplace across North Dublin, in both English and Croatian.

After completing Reduced EDT, you are eligible to book the RSA driving test (current fee: €85). Many Reduced EDT students also book a mock driving test (€100) before their real test to identify any remaining weaknesses.

After Completing Reduced EDT

Once your 6 Reduced EDT lessons have been logged by your RSA-approved instructor, you can book your RSA driving test through the MyRoadSafety portal. You must hold your current Irish learner permit for at least 6 months before sitting the test.

When you pass your RSA test, you apply for your full Irish Category B driving licence at the NDLS. Your full licence does not carry any foreign licence restriction — you will have a standard full Irish licence.
